Introduction

Welcome, mamas! I'm Dr. {name}, and I'm thrilled you're here with me today at {company_name}. As a chiropractor passionate about supporting women through their pregnancy journeys, I'm excited to share how we can work together to help your body prepare for one of life's most incredible experiences.

In today's webinar, we're going to focus on three key elements that are essential for birth preparation: Power, Passage, and Passenger. I'll explain exactly what each of these means and show you how chiropractic care can support all three to create the foundation for a more comfortable pregnancy and smoother birth experience. We'll dive into the relationship between your nervous system, pelvic alignment, and your baby's journey into the world. We will also be discussing Webster Technique and providing more information on exactly what this is!

I know there's a lot to take in when you're educating yourself on pregnancy and birth, so we've created a detailed pregnancy guide that expands on pregnancy as a whole, our recommendations and how chiropractic can support from day one! You'll find it in your email after our webinar, and it's a great resource to refer back to.

Every day at our office, we see pregnant moms who come in for all sorts of reasons. Maybe their back is bothering them, they're not sleeping well, or digestion isn't as smooth as they'd like. But there's something even more important happening when you receive chiropractic care during pregnancy: we're helping prepare your body and nervous system for birth.

That's why today I want to talk about something that affects many women during labor, even though it's not often discussed in prenatal appointments. Sometimes labor can take longer than expected, or it might slow down or stall. You might hear terms like 'failure to progress' or that your baby is having trouble moving down. In the medical world, these situations are called dystocia, which simply means difficult labor.

Understanding what can cause these challenges is the first step in preparing for a smoother birth experience. Think of it like planning a road trip. You want to know about potential roadblocks so you can prepare for them, right? When it comes to birth, there are three main areas we need to consider:

First, there's what's happening with your body physically. How your pelvis is positioned, how your muscles are working together, and how your nervous system is coordinating everything. This is where chiropractic care can make such a difference in your preparation.

Second, we need to consider how stress and emotions affect your birth experience. Your mind and body are deeply connected, especially during pregnancy and birth, so this piece is just as important as the physical aspects.

There's also a third category involving medical and technical factors that we won't dive into today, but I'm always happy to discuss these in more detail if you're interested.

By understanding these factors, you can better prepare your body for birth. Remember, knowledge is power! We're not talking about this to cause worry, but to show you how chiropractic care during pregnancy can help support your body's natural ability to birth your baby.

Part One: POWER

Let's talk about POWER. And I don't mean superhero power (though honestly, growing a baby is pretty superhero-like!). When we talk about power in birth, we're talking about your body's ability to create strong, coordinated contractions that help move your baby down during labor.

During birth, your uterus needs to contract in specific ways to help your baby descend. Sometimes these contractions may face challenges. There are two main types of contraction patterns we see when labor isn't progressing as smoothly as we'd like:

First, your uterus might be working really hard with frequent contractions, but they're not as effective as they could be. This often happens in early labor, and it's like pressing the gas pedal too hard too soon. There is lots of effort but not the progress we're looking for.

The second type is when contractions aren't quite strong enough or seem irregular, usually happening in active labor. Imagine trying to lift something heavy with just your arms instead of engaging your whole body. That is what your uterus might be experiencing.

Here's where chiropractic care comes in, and this is really exciting: Your uterus receives all its instructions through your nervous system. When we adjust your spine, we're helping to clear the path for these vital nerve signals to flow freely. It's like making sure all the roads leading to your uterus are clear of traffic, allowing those important messages to get through without interference.

This is exactly what experts talk about when they refer to 'Power' as one of the key factors in birth. By keeping your nervous system working optimally through chiropractic care, we're supporting your body's natural ability to coordinate those all-important contractions when the big day arrives.

Part Two: Passage

Now let's talk about PASSAGE - how your pelvis creates the perfect path for your baby during birth. You might be surprised to learn that your pelvis isn't just one solid structure - it's actually designed to move and adapt during pregnancy and birth.

When we look at birth preparation, the position and movement of your pelvis play a huge role in creating space for your baby. One really important thing to know is that the position you're in during labor can affect this space. For example, lying flat on your back actually decreases the amount of room in your pelvis for your baby to move through.

Every woman's pelvis is uniquely shaped, which is pretty amazing when you think about it. There are several different types of pelvic shapes, and each one supports birth in its own way. The most common type has a nice round shape with wide angles, making it especially accommodating for birth. Some pelvises are longer front-to-back, some are more compact, and others are wider side-to-side. But here's what's really important to understand: regardless of your pelvis shape, your body has an incredible ability to birth your baby. In fact, we firmly believe that your body won't grow a baby it doesn't think it can birth!

Sometimes your pelvis might not be in its optimal position due to daily stress, past injuries, or even just regular activities. This is where chiropractic care comes in. When we provide adjustments during pregnancy, we're helping to ensure your pelvis is properly aligned. Think of it as creating the most accommodating environment possible for your baby's journey through the birth canal.

The beauty of proper pelvic alignment is that it supports your body's natural ability to birth. Through gentle adjustments, we help maintain the correct position of your pelvis throughout pregnancy, which can contribute to a smoother birth process. Remember, your body has an innate wisdom. Our job is simply to support that wisdom by keeping everything in proper alignment.

What's most empowering about understanding passage is knowing that your body is incredibly well-designed for birth. Through regular chiropractic care, we're simply supporting what your body already knows how to do.

Part Three: Passenger

Let's talk about the final piece of our birth preparation puzzle: PASSENGER aka your baby! This is all about how your little one moves and positions themselves for birth.

The way your baby is positioned in your uterus plays a big role in how smoothly birth progresses. Usually, babies prefer to be head-down, facing your back, as this tends to make their journey through the birth canal easier. The medical term for this position is 'cephalic,' but what's really fascinating is how your body and baby work together to find this position.

Your uterus is held in place by several important ligaments that create the perfect space for your baby to move and position themselves. Think of your uterus as being suspended in your pelvis by these ligaments. There's the broad ligament that provides overall support, the round ligaments that help keep everything stable, and the uterosacral ligaments that connect your uterus to your sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of your spine).

When your pelvis is properly aligned, these ligaments maintain just the right amount of tension to hold your uterus in an optimal position. However, if your sacrum or pelvis becomes misaligned, it can create uneven tension in these ligaments. This uneven tension might affect how much space and freedom of movement your baby has to find their best position for birth.

This is where chiropractic care becomes so valuable during pregnancy. Through gentle adjustments, we work to maintain proper pelvic alignment, which helps keep those ligaments balanced. When everything is aligned and balanced, your baby has the best possible environment to move into an optimal position for birth.

However, I want to share something really important: sometimes babies choose positions that might seem less than ideal to us, and that's okay. There can be reasons unknown to us why a baby might prefer a certain position. Your body and your baby have incredible wisdom all their own, and they're working together in ways we don't always understand. At {company_name}, we trust this innate wisdom while providing support through proper alignment.

Through our care plans and adjustments, we focus on creating the most supportive environment possible for your baby to find their best position for birth. We're not forcing anything. We're simply supporting your body's natural ability to accommodate your baby's journey.

Summary

Let me bring everything together and show you how chiropractic adjustments support all three key elements of birth - Power, Passage, and Passenger. When we provide gentle adjustments to your sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of your spine), we're creating positive changes throughout your body that support birth in several important ways.

For Power, the adjustment helps your nervous system function better by reducing stress and restoring normal muscle function. This means your body can better coordinate those important labor contractions. We're also helping to decrease sympathetic (fight or flight) activity and restore proper nerve signaling throughout your pelvis.

For Passage, we're optimizing your pelvic balance. This creates the maximum amount of space possible for your baby to move through during birth. A balanced pelvis means a more accommodating path for your baby.

For Passenger, your baby benefits too! The adjustment helps restore normal tension to all the important ligaments that support your uterus. This includes the broad ligament, which connects to other crucial ligaments in your pelvis. When these ligaments have proper tension, any unnecessary pressure on your uterus is reduced. This gives your baby the best possible environment to move into an optimal position for birth.

The beautiful thing about this process is how interconnected everything is. By addressing your sacral alignment, we're supporting your body's natural ability to birth your baby in multiple ways. It's like giving your body all the tools it needs to work as nature intended.

Emotional Stress

Let's talk about something really important but not often discussed; how stress during pregnancy affects both you and your baby. Now, I want to start by saying something crucial. If you're feeling stressed during pregnancy, you're not alone and you haven't failed. Pregnancy itself can be stressful, and life doesn't pause just because we're expecting. What matters most is understanding how we can support you and your baby during this time.

When you experience stress, your body releases hormones like cortisol. During pregnancy, these stress hormones can cross the placenta and reach your baby. This is actually a normal process. Your body and baby are meant to communicate. However, when stress becomes prolonged or intense, it can influence how your baby's nervous system develops.

Research has shown us that the environment your baby experiences during pregnancy helps shape their development. Think of it as your baby learning about the world before they even enter it. When stress hormones are consistently elevated, it may affect various aspects of your baby's development (e.g. from their early growth to how they process stress after birth). Some studies have even shown that prolonged stress might influence things like birth timing and your baby's birth weight.

But here's the empowering part. Your nervous system has an incredible ability to adapt and heal. This means that even if you've been experiencing stress, there are ways to support both you and your baby. This is where chiropractic care becomes so valuable. When we provide adjustments, we're helping your body shift from that stressed state into a more relaxed, healing state. We can actually measure this change through our nervous system scans, showing us exactly how your body is responding to care.

For those who want to dive deeper into understanding this connection between mom's stress and baby's development, I often recommend Bruce Lipton's book 'Biology of Belief.' He explains fascinating research about how our experiences can influence gene expression (what scientists call epigenetics).

The most important thing to remember is that managing stress isn't about achieving some perfect, stress-free state. That's not realistic. It's about giving your body the support it needs to recover and adapt to stress more effectively. This is exactly what we focus on in our care approach: helping your nervous system become more resilient so you can better handle life's challenges during pregnancy.

Remember, reaching out for support isn't a sign of weakness. It is one of the most powerful things you can do for yourself and your baby. Whether that's through chiropractic care, connecting with other moms, or finding moments of peace in your day, every step you take to manage stress is beneficial for both you and your little one."

Webster + Conclusion

Now I want to tell you about a specific technique that can help support everything we've discussed today. It's called the Webster Technique. This gentle and precise approach was developed specifically with pregnant women in mind, though its benefits extend beyond pregnancy.

The Webster Technique focuses on the sacrum (the triangular bone at the base of your spine that connects to your pelvis we mentioned earlier). When this area is properly aligned, it helps create balance throughout your entire pelvis. Think about how much your pelvis does during pregnancy. It's supporting your growing belly, adapting to changes in your posture, and preparing for birth. That's why keeping it balanced is so crucial.

During pregnancy, any misalignment in your pelvis can create uneven tension in the surrounding muscles and ligaments. This uneven tension might limit how freely your baby can move within your uterus. The Webster Technique helps restore proper alignment and balance, which in turn may help your baby find their optimal position for birth.

What makes this technique so valuable is that it addresses both the structural aspects of your pelvis and the function of your nervous system. By ensuring your sacrum is properly aligned, we're supporting your body's natural ability to create the best possible environment for your baby's growth and eventual birth.

To wrap up everything we've covered today, let's remember the key points:

  • Your body has an incredible inherent wisdom when it comes to birth

  • The three Ps: Power, Passage, and Passenger, work together in harmony when your body is properly aligned

  • Stress management is a crucial part of pregnancy, and your nervous system plays a vital role

  • The Webster Technique can help support optimal alignment throughout your pregnancy

If you're interested in receiving this type of care during your pregnancy, it's important to work with a chiropractor who is specifically trained in the Webster Technique. If you're not in our area, you can find a certified Webster practitioner through ICPA4kids.org.

Remember, every step you take to support your body during pregnancy is an investment in both your health and your baby's well-being. You're doing an amazing job preparing for this incredible journey of birth!
